This wide ranging musical encounter inaugurated the 28th edition of the festival
with a programme mainly in the spirit of the Scandinavian
countries. The title of the concert is ‘From the Deep North’ with the
Swedish duo, mezzo-soprano Petra Jablonski and pianist Patrik
Jablonski, also husband and wife in life. They covered rare and
nearly unknown - at least for us - songs from Norway and
Finland with Grieg and Sibelius: songs that they brought to life
vividly, highlighting a freer and less orthodox writing than the standard German
lieder repertoire.
The Sibelius songs for contralto exhibited stunning qualities of voice control by Petra and started the evening in the most dramatic way. The Scandinavian mood then became more mellow with the songs of Stenhammar. Here we enjoyed Petra’s shining voice in between the challenging piano parts, the difficult combination of dramatic forte and delicate pianissimo was mastered by the evening’s soloists in a
brilliant way.

Between the vocal items there was space for the some solo piano items. In the transcriptions from the Grieg’s Peer Gynt we heard a very delicate Anitra’s Dance played with all the colours imagined from a Scandinavian midsummer night and also a very accurate interpretation of the ‘Hall of the Mountain King’. Above all in
Polonaise heroic Op.53 of Chopin he seemed irrepressible, with a
curious, imaginative attitude, and very furious attack of this
masterpiece. Maybe after all the finale of the evening was the
highlight, ‘I Hate Music’ by L. Bernstein, brought the evening to a close with a very
comic and spirited performance.
